</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/27/grumpy-grouchy-and-violent-co-workers/</link><description>Listening to a talk show host on the radio recently, I was appalled to learn that people behave so badly to co-workers on the job these days — and it’s getting worse.
One of the contributing reasons for it is the stress stemming from the declining economy and the everyday challenges at home and work that add pressure to the mix.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/27/show-me-money-jerry-mcguire/</link><description>For those of you not familiar with this line, it is from the 1996 movie Jerry McGuire, starring Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding, Jr. The phrase, in some form, will show up during conversations with employees at various times.
In good economic times, we usually hear this phrase in some form during employee evaluations or other discussions revolving around performance — either good or bad.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/27/raising-calves/</link><description>There is a job on the farm that almost always becomes the job of the farmer’s wife - rescuing, feeding and tending motherless baby calves, lambs, kids or piglets. The first time this happened to me, we had a wonderful milk cow that died of milk fever after the calving. We named the calf Orphan Andy and brought him up on goat milk.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/27/dangerous-game/</link><description>California’s legislators are up to their usual end-of-summer high-jinks by playing games with the state’s annual budget, which they should have passed by July 1.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/20/ever-worked-attila-hun/</link><description>It’s Monday morning and you are dreading work because you are sure Attila the Hun will be on the rampage when you arrive. If you have ever worked for a person exhibiting this management style, it is an experience you will never forget and one I hope never to repeat.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/20/bossy-our-cow/</link><description>My husband, George, and I both grew up with livestock in Trinity County where we enjoyed both the rural life and the livestock. That was, until the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation seized our little ranch, deeded our water rights out for a pittance and closed George’s job. We had no place to go and no money to buy any more property.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/20/dont-give-it-will-soon-cool-down/</link><description>I can already sense fall in the air. It’s a phenomenon that seems to arrive in August each year. Oh, some years it’s subtle — the heat is still on — but there are ways to detect the arrival of this season.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/20/still-some-buzz-left/</link><description>Another summer of music and song is quickly drawing to a close, now that the 11-week free community concert series in Anderson has ended. The final concert, held Wednesday, Aug. 13, featured a sponsors appreciation dinner and the lively tunes of Capitol Records artist Ryan Shupe and Rubberband.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/13/morals-ethics-today/</link><description>I was challenged recently to reveal what I thought of America’s future. I was sorry to say that I don’t like the looks of what I have seen over the past decades.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/13/more-few-bumps-road/</link><description>Cruising up Highway 273 toward Redding, in no particular hurry the other day, I almost lost control of my car after hitting a rough spot on the road. It had either been poorly patched or the section of asphalt had sunk leaving behind a gaping hole.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/13/am-i-manager-babysitter-or-referee/</link><description>Have you ever walked into work and thought you took a wrong turn and ended up at a double smack down extreme cage fight? Or worse, a tag team event complete with, “They said or did etc., etc.” It makes you wonder if it is really illegal to use TASER guns or pepper spray on employees at times like this.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/06/no-time-waste-salvage-wood/</link><description>As any forester knows, there is little if any time to spare when it comes to harvesting trees damaged by wild fire.
John Sessions, a leading expert on salvage logging and a forestry professor at Oregon State University, argued that point in January 2004 after studying the 2002 Biscuit blaze that charred nearly 500,000 acres of Siskiyou National Forest.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/06/why-have-schools/</link><description>Why are there schools? This seems like a foolish question to any thinking adult because the answer is so obvious.
However, I have heard different answers from former students and others.
Too many young people would say, as one of my students did one day, “To be with my friends.” To her and others like her, school was just a social gathering.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/06/camping-escape-inland-smoke/</link><description>My plan was to get us out of the heavy air created by North State fires burning for more than a month. So, my two grandsons and I headed west. Two years ago, I had promised the boys a camping trip, but it was put off for one reason or the other.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/aug/06/businesses-need-chain-command/</link><description>My original thought was to launch this article stating you should have an official or unofficial chain of command, but I rescind that idea.
In my opinion, every business must have an official written chain of command in place. Chain of command, organizational hierarchy, responsibility ladder or corporate structure — the terms and phrases all mean the same thing and every organization has one.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/jul/30/budget-cuts-affect-neighborhood-safety/</link><description>Whether California faces rosy or gloomy times, we must always make public safety the number one priority. If our streets, parks and schools aren’t safe from gang violence and other crimes, then nothing else really matters. Before anything else, we have to be safe.
