Before that, for many years it was a gravel road and then a dirt road and trail. This led to the first or second Coleman Fish Hatchery. This was a hidden away kind of operation, which was dedicated to the preservation of the wonderful and very large migration of salmon from the ocean up Battle Creek to spawn on a yearly basis.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/nov/19/south-county-profile-douglas-matheson/?partner=RSS</link><description>Doug Matheson moved to Shasta County two years ago from the San Fernando Valley.
After spending eight years there, Matheson and his wife realized that the San Fernando Valley was not the environment in which they wanted to raise a family. Matheson's wife came to Northern California to visit relatives and fell in love with the area. When Matheson arrived here in Shasta County, he knew it was where they belonged. Cottonwood had a small-town atmosphere just like the town in Texas where he grew up.

</title><link>http://andersonvalleypost.com/news/2008/nov/19/cottonwood-farmer-marilyn-miller-60-dies-remembere/?partner=RSS</link><description>Marilyn Miller, 60, co-owner of Hard Row to Hoe Organic Farm in Cottonwood, died Oct. 30.
Ray and Marilyn Miller's farm was famous for its tomatoes, squash, carrots and the pocket-sized free recipes the husband-and-wife team would feature at their Redding Certified Farmers Market booth.
A memorial booth sat at a recent Saturday's market — the same spot where the Millers greeted customers for some 25 years — to honor Marilyn.
