At the National Football League’s regional event of the Punt, Pass and Kick competition held in Oakland last weekend, two South County athletes made impressive showings.
Despite playing on poor field conditions at Brookfield Park, approximately one mile from the Raiders’ McAfee Stadium, Meadow Lane third grader Miranda Montoya and Pacheco seventh grader Alex Henderson performed valiantly.
Miranda bettered her personal best in the competition and finished third in her respective division.
As the only 12-year-old competing in the 12 and 13-year-old division, Alex finished first in his division at the competition and earned a national ranking of 16. Despite his first place finish in Oakland, Alex barely missed out on qualifying for the national championships which will be held at the NFC championship game on Jan. 14, 2007.
Following the competition the athletes attended the Oakland Raiders game versus the St. Louis Rams, a game in which the Raiders lost 20-0.
The future looks bright for these two locals as they both look to improve their skills and compete in the NFL’s Punt, Pass and Kick competition in the future.
Alex and Miranda’s journey to the regional competition would not have been possible without the sponsorship of the Enterprise Lion’s Club.
