SEWING WARMTH: Anderson High School Life Skills classes, under the direction of teacher Mary Springhorn, presented Oak River Rehab with lap quilts the classes learned how to make.

Students who, according to their teacher Mary Springhorn, “did not know how to thread a needle” when they began their Anderson Union High School life skills project some four weeks ago, designed and then made lap quilts — some 31 of them.

The students then took their quilts to the Oak River Rehab Center where they were distributed to the elderly residents.

Teacher Mary Springhorn said the program “teaches empathy for older people.” Springhorn’s sentiments were echoed by Tim Iman and Halie VanEperen who said it also taught them “responsibility.”

The students learned to make design patterns, select the materials to be used and to learn the different stitches that were used in their quilt making.

“Giving the quilts to the elderly was the finish to a very rewarding class,” said VanEperen.
