Children in attendance at story time at the Cottonwood Community Library at noon on April 25 will have the opportunity to help make a quilt and see a professional’s quilt get raffled off as well. During story time hour, the children will draw reading-related pictures with permanent markers on squares of muslin donated by Quilts in the Attic of Cottonwood. The event occurs in conjunction with “Week of the Young Child,” a week dedicated by First 5 Shasta to the development of children.
The quilt will be displayed in the new Cottonwood Community Library, scheduled to open June 1.
But the quilt to be raffled off during story time wasn’t created by a beginner. Betty McFadyen has made over 200 quilts, and it took her two months to produce the quilt to be raffled. Born in Red Bluff and a Cottonwood resident thereafter, she has seven grandchildren.
“They all have a quilt for every day of the week,” McFadyen said.
Her 12-year-old grandchild has already made four quilts while at his grandmother’s place in Cottonwood.
She even has a box of quilts put away for any great-grandchildren that she may miss in the future.
Raffle tickets for McFadyen’s quilt are available at the Cottonwood Community Library at 3306 Main St. or at Tri Counties Bank, 3349 Main St. in Cottonwood where the quilt is on display. Tickets cost $5 each or three for $10.
