Assembly Bill 1694, submitted by California Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa, passed out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee on a 6-0 vote on April 17. After amendments, AB 1694 will expand penalties for sexual misconduct with a 14 or 15 year old to those perpetrators seven or more years older than the child.

Current law protects 14 and 15 year olds if the predator is at least 10 years older.

The bill provides for a penalty of up to three years for any person who willfully commits any lewd or lascivious act upon a child who is 14 or 15 years old, when the person is at least seven years older than the child.
