HAPPY VALLEY HURLER: Kody Corbell pitched for three innings during the championship game.

Blue Lightning Baseball was started three years ago with one team.

It had the goal of “teaching a better brand of baseball and getting these kids ready for junior high and high school baseball,” said manager Dean Erickson.

“I have felt for a long time that little league didn’t help prepare kids for their school baseball experience so I started to put together a great group of coaches that would help mold these boys into the future stars of the north valley,” said Erickson

Blue Lightning baseball has now grown into five different teams involving up to 70 boys that are getting a chance to do what they love most, learn the game of baseball and play up to 12 months a year.

Most of the teams get to play in one or two tournaments a month with almost all the tournaments at Big League Dreams Sports Park in Redding. The ages of the teams are 10 and under all the way up to 15 and under. They all play with high school rules, so they learn how to lead off on the bases and pitchers learn to work from a windup and the stretch.

The Aug. 4-5 weekend had the 14 and under team go for a 3-0 in their first game but then lost in the championship game 3-1, finishing second. The 11 and under team also finished second losing in the championship game.
