Anderson Police officers placed Anderson Heights Elementary School and a nearby childcare center in lockdown last Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. and then the school was reopened at 10:45 a.m., according to Dr. Wesley Smith, superintendent of the Cascade Union Elementary School District.
The Anderson Police Department had the school go into lock down when the California Highway Patrol began searching for a vehicle reported stolen from the Anderson area. The suspects, a male and a female, abandoned the vehicle and ran down nearby Bruce Street.
A CHP helicopter and a patrol car assisted with the search and chase, as did several Shasta County Sheriff’s deputy patrol units, a Marshall’s office assistant and the Anderson Police looked for the suspects, which was reported later, had fled the scene. A citizen reported a close call as a vehicle ran a red light at North Street. At that point, a K-9 unit from Redding, which had been dispatched, was canceled, according to Anderson Police Officer Bryan Vandyke.
Dr. Smith explained that all though there was no real danger to the Anderson Highs students, it was “a good test for our emergency procedures.”
The suspects apparently obtained a ride from a passing motorist, but the CHP helicopter lost sight of that vehicle as it was last seen heading toward Redding.
