Girls Soccer
The Anderson Cubs (1-5-2 NAL, 3-6-3) had control of their game against Central Valley early last week, but eventually had to settle for a 1-1 tie.
Anderson’s Laurie Loomis netted a goal halfway through the second half to give the Cubs a 1-0 advantage, but Central Valley managed to tie the game with only two minutes remaining.
Forwards Dana Dayton and Lauren Risling had standout performances for the Cubs.
The Cubs struggled in a home game versus the first place Lassen Grizzlies later in the week. The Cubs surrendered four first half goals en route to a 7-0 NAL loss.
The Lady Cubs travel to Corning to conclude their NAL schedule tomorrow.
Jordan Kelly’s second half goal helped the West Valley Eagles earn a 1-1 tie with the Lassen Grizzlies early last week.
Goalkeeper Jennifer Mueller had 16 saves, while Cassie Debonis was a force on defense for the Eagles.
Later in the week the Lady Eagles were defeated by the Yreka Miners, 5-0.
Mueller had another impressive game with 16 saves, while teammate Jordan Kelley also played well for West Valley.
The Lady Eagles host the Central Valley Falcons in their final NAL game tomorrow.
Boys Soccer
Jose Melendez, Kody Kraft, Josh Sherman, Shin Gabriele and Jesse Ramirez each scored goals for the Anderson Cubs (5-1-2 NAL, 8-3-2) in their 5-1 victory over Central Valley early last week.
Goalie Angel Melendez led the way in an impressive defensive effort for Anderson with six saves.
The Cubs earned their second win of the week on Thursday with a 3-1 victory over the Lassen Grizzlies.
Sherman led the Cubs with two goals and two assists, while Jose Melendez added a goal and an assist.
Goalie Angel Melendez provided eight saves in the victory, including a stopped penalty kick.
Anderson travels to Corning for their final NAL game tomorrow.
The West Valley Eagles (3-4 NAL, 4-5-1) managed a 0-0 tie in their match against the Lassen Grizzlies last week, before winning a 2-1 affair against the Yreka Miners.
Joel Colterman and Derrick Williamson catapulted the Eagles over the Miners with their respective goals.
The Eagles play host to Central Valley in concluding their NAL schedule tomorrow.
NAL Wrestling
The West Valley Eagles dominated the Central Valley Falcons in their dual meet last week, as the Eagles scored nine pins en route to a 52-30 victory.
Kayne Groner, Devin Rohrer, Michael Spoon, Derek Clark, Nick Brewer, Aaron Davis and Steven Jones recorded pins for the Eagles, while Michael Maynard also recorded a victory.
The Eagles and the rival Anderson Cubs will compete in the NAL championships on Sat., 10 a.m., West Valley High School.
Youth Wrestling
The Eagles wrestling club will be having sign-ups for freestyle and Greco/Roman on Feb. 27-29, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the small gym at West Valley High School.
Sign-ups will be for boys and girls ages 6-and-older, with a cost of $45 for the first wrestler and $40 for each additional sibling.

College Football
West Valley senior Josh McOmber, an All-NAL free safety for the Eagles last season, is expected to sign his letter of intent to play football for the Eastern Washington Eagles of the Big Sky Conference.
After visiting the Eastern Washington campus along with West Valley Head Coach Greg Grandell and offensive coordinator Jim Vert, it is expected that McOmber will join former West Valley quarterback Matt Nichols on Eastern Washington’s roster. Nichols was the starting quarterback for Eastern Washington last fall as a red shirt freshman, throwing for 1,749 yards and eight touchdowns.
Last season the Eagles finished 3-5 in conference play, while accumulating a 3-8 record overall.
