With summer starting less than two weeks ago the activities sponsored by the Anderson Parks and Recreation are picking up speed and attendees.
The Tuesday and Thursday low impact floor aerobics and strength training classes at the Anderson Community Center are in full swing.
Instructor Barbara Richelieu said the drop-in, on-going class is “for all ages, abilities, sizes and shapes.”
Music is played as the adults do their exercises led by Richelieu. Strength training is included in the $2 class.
Attendee Elaine Amlin said that the class was getting her back in shape after a stint in the hospital.
Summer of Fun Playgrounds
The free drop-in supervised summer program for youth ages 6-12 continues at Anderson River Park each weekday from 9 until noon. There are afternoon sites between 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Anderson Heights Elementary School and the Happy Valley Community Center.
Recreation Supervisor Pam Lewis said that this year’s counselors are veterans from past years and are “superb.” Counselors range in age from 16-23 and have all been through the summer program, did volunteer work and are now there as paid staff members. New volunteers over the age of 16 were also assisting to learn the ropes for possible summer employment next year.
Some of the counselors are Anderson Union High School graduates and others came from North Valley High School, Central Valley High, Evergreen Middle, Anderson Middle and Anderson Union High School.
Food snacks are provided in the playground program through a federal food program from Anderson Union High School District and is prepared by Judy Knaeble.
When “food” is announced to the young people they line up and receive sanitary hand wipes before going to the picnic tables to “chow down.”
Cubs Basketball Camp
Boys and girls gathered in the Anderson Union High School gym last week every evening from 6-8 p.m. to learn various basketball drills from Anderson basketball coach Jim Holcomb. The 30 plus group of students from various schools in the area listened and did what Holcomb said as they learned footwork, ball handling, passing the ball, shooting and offensive and defensive moves.
Sarah Pendergraft and Carlyn Edwards, both incoming freshmen from Pacheco School shot baskets. At another side basket hoop, 5th grade student Caitlyn Hipol from Meadow Lane School practiced shooting baskets with Anna Traetz, a 2nd grade student at North Cottonwood School. Traetz’s brother Jesse, a 4th grade student, from North Cottonwood worked on footwork skills.
Another basketball camp runs from July 9-13, 6-8 p.m. in the Anderson High School gym. The cost of the camp is $35 and it includes a camp T-shirt.
