Anderson splits opening weekend
The Anderson Little League’s Girls 9-10-year-old All-star team split in their debut opening weekend, June 30 – July 1, at the Cottonwood Little League Park. Anderson was shut down on Saturday, 11-1, in their opening game against Red Bluff.
“First game jitters and a couple of costly errors figured into the loss,” said coach Marvin Briggs.
Fallon Greenhaw scored the lone run for the little ladies from Anderson.
In Sunday’s game, the team fared better sending the All-stars from Foothill home early in a 19-2, four inning, romp.
“The entire team played well,” said Briggs
“It was nice they could put the first game behind them and come out and play the way coach Jeff Pokorny and I knew they were capable of,” said Briggs.
Makenzie Arbiso and Faith Klocke each scored four times in the game and Anderson pitcher Nicole Briggs scattered three hits and had seven strike-outs for the win.
“Nicky had good control and kept her head in the game for someone making her first start in All-stars. Her team came out and gave her the early run support she needed to relax and throw a great game,” Briggs said about his daughter.
Anderson beats Corning
Little League Girls 9-10 All-star team survived a rocky first inning and near record heat to beat Corning, 19-7, last Thursday to advance to the next round of the local Cottonwood tournament.
“The combination of coming off the July 4th holiday, where the kids were likely up late watching fireworks, and then having to play in 112-degree weather was probably a bit much for both teams,” commented Briggs.
After almost an hour-long first inning, which finally ended after a combined 18 runs, Briggs wondered how long his kids were going to have to endure the sweltering temperatures.
“We settled down first and then were able to hold Corning off for the four inning win,” said Briggs.
“It was a total team effort under some very tough circumstances for such a young team.”
Next up for the Blue and Gold was the tournament host and local rivals from Cottonwood.
Anderson Cottonwood square off
The Anderson Little League Girls 9-10 All-star team came to an end Saturday with a loss to their rivals from Cottonwood.
The game was tied 6-6 in the fourth inning and then there were a few late calls that didn’t go Anderson’s way.
“Before you knew it, Cottonwood had put the game away,” said Briggs.
“My hats off to both teams, neither knows the word “quit” and both played well above their young age in the tournament,” he added.
Fallon Greenhaw had an excellent game for the Blue and Gold with two singles, a triple, and three RBIs while Nicole Briggs remained consistent in the pitchers circle, striking out five in as many innings.
The girls from Anderson finished in third place in the District while the championship game will be decided tonight at 7 p.m. between Cottonwood and the undefeated Red Bluff squad.
