It is an honor to have a time or a distance in an event to qualify to go to the state track and field meet and several ladies and gentlemen from West Valley High School had those numbers.

Last Friday track members from the entire state, who qualified, traveled to Sacramento to compete with others to, as they say, “go for the gold.” West Valley’s freshman Cassie DeBonis, sophomores Michelle Johnson and Katie Jungwirth along with juniors Taylor Samuels, Nichole Barry and Ethan Ostrom accompanied seniors Alyssa Christensen, Rachelle Russell, Stephanie Alward, Becky Unger, Josh McOmber and Jake Fuller to the state events.

On the girl’s side of the events the 1600-meter run, 300 low hurdles, 4x100 and 4x400 relays, the discus, high jump and triple jump were represented and on the boy’s side the 110 high hurdles, the 300 int. hurdles, the discus throw and pole vault events had spots.

Unfortunately, all but Fuller, had times or distances to get in the top scoring columns. Fuller brought home a third place medal in the discus throw with a 185 feet 7 inches recorded.

This was the last time for the senior members but the experience the remaining members of the team received brings great promise to next year’s West Valley team.
