Meadow Lane Elementary School in Anderson had two assemblies last Friday so all students could see a check for $5,240 given to the school.

Wal-Mart is awarding more than $25,000 to Chico/Redding Area Schools to recognize students’ efforts to recycle plastic bags. The program encouraged local elementary students to help gather nearly 28 tons of recyclable plastic through its Kids Recycling Challenge program.

Meadow Lane topped all 66 participating schools in the Chico/Redding area by filling 448 60-gallon collection bags weighing 7,168 pounds. In addition to receiving $5 per 60-gallon bag and the $3,000 grand prize, the students were rewarded by a program from EarthCapades Environmental Vaudeville.

“By participating in the Wal-Mart Kids Recycling Challenge, our staff, students and parents helped raise money for much-needed new playground equipment,” said Shirley Quibell, third grade teacher at Meadow Lane School.

“As an active leader in the local communities that our stores serve, Wal-Mart is committed to improving the environment, increasing awareness about recycling, and helping our schools get much-needed funding,” said Timothy Trimble, Manager of the Wal-Mart Store in Anderson.
