FLYING LADY EAGLES: Rachelle Russell had 20 points as the West Valley girls upset Enterprise by taking the Northern Section Title.

Tabytha Wampler started it. Rachelle Russell finished it. West Valley High School Lady Eagles basketball team upset Enterprise 66-52 in last Saturday’s Northern Section Division III championship. Tabytha Wampler and Rachelle Russell each had 21 points in the Eagles’ win over the Hornets. They have met in the finals for the past three seasons with Enterprise taking the first two wins. Wampler had 13 points in the first quarter as West Valley had an eight-point lead. The Hornets came within two points by halftime. The two teams were close when West Valley’s Russell took over.

The girls game featured a match of two women — Enterprise’s Hillary Hurley and West Valley’s Tabytha Wampler. Hurley, the Hornets’ senior, is now ready to play volleyball and Wampler, a junior, lead her team to a 66-52 victory. Valley had lost two straight D-III finals to Enterprise.

LADY EAGLES - Semifinals

Last Tuesday, Feb. 27, senior Rachelle Russell took the West Valley High School girls basketball team to their third straight Northern Section title appearance with a 30-point night as No. 2 West Valley (21-4) beat No. 3 Las Plumas 60-52.

The Las Plumas Thunderbirds led West Valley and held on to a 39-38 lead through three quarters. Jasmine Mally dunked a 3-pointer with under three minutes left to cut the Las Plumas lead to 50-49. Las Plumas (19-9) lost to the Eagles who improved their winning streak to 10 games.

EAGLES - Finals

Enterprise High School put away West Valley at Shasta College last Saturday night. Eagles took a 10-point lead while the Enterprise Hornets only had 15 points in the entire first half of the game. The Hornets outscored the Eagles 30-20 in the second half and took their first lead since the first quarter. Whenever Enterprise took the lead, West Valley would sink a 3-pointer. All nine of the Eagles’ fourth-quarter points came from the outside. Duenas and Parent both finished with 16 points. Parent added six rebounds and two blocks to his record. West Valley’s Eagles lost the chance to extend the Northern Section Division III basketball finals with Enterprise.

The Hornets took the Eagles with a 51-48 victory. Enterprise had 10 straight section crowns before West Valley beat them in the 2005 semifinals.

EAGLES - Semifinals

The start of the 2nd quarter in last Wednesday’s Boy’s Div. III semifinal basketball game against Las Plumas could have been the start of the game for West Valley when they sank 21 points for the time period, compared to their slow first quarter.

The Las Plumas Thunderbirds (16-9) trailed the No. 1 Eagles 9-6 through eight minutes when West Valley’s senior guard Thomas O’Brien had three 3-pointers and the Eagles built a 30-18 halftime lead. The guard finished with the game-high 20 points as West Valley took its first section title game since it won in 2005. The Eagles took the game 59-42.
