Anderson Cubs Softball Classic
West Valley pitcher Cierra Rovera threw pitches to beat the South Medford Panthers while Cassidy Olson hit one off the Fenway park’s “Green Monster” at Big League Dreams (BLD) park in Redding last Saturday. The Lady Eagles had a 6-0, five-plus inning win over South Medford in the 5th annual Anderson Cubs Classic.
Rovera had first-pitch strikes against 10 batters giving up two hits and she didn’t allow a base runner past second base.
The Lady Eagles defeated Paradise 6-0 as Samantha Herman threw a shutout. Rovera went 3-for-4 and Niki Feuerbach was 2-for-4 in that game.
The Eagles then had 10-0 win over Gridley in their third game. Ashily Howerton went 2-for-3 and had two doubles. Megan Mazanac also went 2-for-3 for West Valley.
In the South Medford game the Eagles scored the first two runs. Nicki Feuerbach had a single to score West Valley’s first run in the bottom of the first.
Howerton singled and stole second with Mazanec at the plate but was ousted on a fielder’s choice before Bayley Bowman loaded the bases with a walk. Feuerbach them singled home Mazanec. When Rovera hit to the second baseman she turned and got Feuerbach off of first.
On the first of two days, 24 teams combine for 36 games with teams from three states and teams from as far south as Bakersfield.
West Valley, Lassen and Red Bluff are usually in the Northern Section playoffs along with Oregon’s South Medford and Grants Pass and Reno Nev.’s Galena High School.
The Lassen Grizzlies beat West Valley 7-4 on Saturday by scoring five runs in the fifth inning.
Anderson drew Shasta, Bella Vista and Galena in the draw.
Track and Field
Eagle Classic Relays
Fifteen schools competed at the meet with the Enterprise boys winning at West Valley High School. The Enterprise Hornets scored 85 points, followed by Sonoma with 67 and West Valley had 66.
Enterprise took a first in the 400 relay, the 3,200 relay, the medley relay and the hurdles relay.
Anderson’s Cody McNamara took third place in the individual pole vault at 11 feet, but took a first in the boys high jump 6-0. Anderson’s Chad Dunlap was second in the long jump with 19-0.
Baseball
West Valley’s varsity baseball beat Shasta High School 5-1 on Wednesday, March 21.
Jared Frye threw a complete game with a four-hitter and, at the plate, he was 3-for-4. Roy Button was 2-3 with an RBI. Troy Duenas had a double and scored twice. Al Doiron threw two runners out attempting to steal. Derek Emmen had two RBI’s.
In league play against rival Anderson last Friday, Anderson came from behind to win 16-13.
Anderson’s Zach Gibbins hit a grand slam home run as the Cubs scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh to beat West Valley.
West Valley’s Cody McCary went 2-for-4 with two doubles as Kody Kraft went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Johnny Greene went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and picked up the win for Anderson.
Softball
The Grants Pass Cavemen beat Lassen, for the second time in two days with a 5-0 in the final game. Last year Grants Pass came from behind to beat West Valley in the tournament semifinals and then won the title.
