Comments from Chris: Summertime is here, enjoy!

I haven’t been able to figure out why the citizens of the South County continue to moan about having nothing to do on the weekends.

Just take a look at our weekly events calendar and you can see there are plenty of things to do and see.

With the Memorial Day weekend coming up the staff has spent some time compiling a list of places to go and things to do that are within a day’s drive or just in our backyard. See page A-3 for the complete list.

One of our most traditional events has moved to this holiday weekend — The Happy Valley Strawberry Festival. On Saturday, May 26, make the short trek to Happy Valley and enjoy the fresh, sweet fruit of our season, strawberries. You’ll never forgive yourself if you miss out!

Traditional Memorial Day services will be held at the various cemeteries throughout our area. A dedication of a new memorial will be held at the Veterans Cemetery at Igo.

Memorial Day also marks the final days of the school year and the beginning of summer. It becomes the time to make more plans for vacations and fun in the sun.

With the continued high price for gas, I’m sure that more people are going to stay closer to home this year, or if a traveling vacation is planned, make the most of it.

This will be the summer to discover the variety of things to do in our own little piece of heaven.

Anderson has a remarkable park with plenty of trails to hike and bike. The new Teen Center will be open and ready for events. Opportunities for swimming abound!

I can remember how much I looked forward to summertime and it was always gone in the blink of an eye. I’m sure it’s still the same way for youngsters today.

During the upcoming three-day holiday, take some time to smell the roses and make plans to explore your own backyard.
