Dear Editor:

We are writing in regards to the proposed routing of the Tullis gravel trucks for the Shasta Ranch Mining and Reclamation Plan. It has come to our attention that it appears that the county recommendation is suggesting that these trucks will be routed through downtown Cottonwood.

We are against this routing for several reasons. Most of the south side of Front Street is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The street was one of the earliest settlements in Shasta County.

By approving this routing for these trucks through Cottonwood, Shasta County will then be held accountable for the destruction of this historic town. This will also ruin the less than adequate roads. This does not even address pollution and noise in this historic town. Has anyone considered the impact on downtown businesses?

The Cottonwood schools will also suffer. The busses have less visibility and more liability due to inadequate roads and increased traffic. Children walking home from school or going to community events are at a much higher risk. Once again the citizens of Cottonwood will hold Shasta County accountable.

Finally, Bowman Road at best is more than substandard for the amount of daily traffic it currently has. At peak hours, the vehicles are bumper to bumper for miles. Here again, this greatly increases the chances of accidents and therefore more liability. Thus, accountability is once again directed to Shasta County.

To all residents, please do not allow this to happen to historic Cottonwood. The final public comment meeting will be at the Planning Commission’s meeting May 31 at 2 p.m. in the Supervisor’s Chambers at 1450 Court St., Room 263, Redding. Please be there to stop this destruction of Cottonwood.

There will be a protest march in downtown Cottonwood on May 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. Please join us to save historic Cottonwood. Call Linda at 347-3654, Lori at 347-7082 or Rita at 347-6904.

Editor:

This weekend we honor the veterans, men and women, who have served our country, and many gave their lives in that service.

In honoring veterans we recognize the dedication, courage and sacrifice and we also celebrate the freedoms they gave us.

Every Memorial Day the Anderson VFW, Post 9650, has a beautiful and touching ceremony at the Anderson Cemetery honoring our veterans — both living and dead.

This year the ceremony will be on May 28 at 11 a.m. at the Anderson Cemetery off Bruce Street.

The VFW always invites distinguished members of Shasta County to speak and various organizations display wreaths and flowers at the foot of the flagpole.

Please take an hour off your busy schedule and come join us in honoring the veterans.

Many of our outstanding and brave veterans have given the ultimate sacrifice in dying for this great country. They passed on to us a legacy of liberty and freedom.

This Memorial Day is a special time to say thank you to our veterans for our freedom of speech, freedom to worship, freedom to get an education.

So please, join the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary, the unsung heroes who work behind the scenes and do not get the proper thanks and recognition they truly deserve.

George J. Scheider

Chaplain, Anderson VFW
