West Valley track continues with wins

West Valley High School junior Florian Gaul arrived at the Redding airport on Sept. 17, three days before the 2007-08 school year started. The West Valley High School foreign exchange student from Stuttgart, Germany, said that he loved sports. This school year he ran cross country and played soccer. Now he is on the track team. Last fall he said that in Germany he had vaulted 4.58 meters (15 feet) over the bar.

This past week Gaul cleared 15 feet in the pole vault at a Northern Athletic League meet in Shasta Lake. The vault ties the third-highest vault in Northern Section history. Anderson Cub Howie Dooley set the record in 1987. In the year 2000, West Valley Eagle Tyler Gray holds the section record of 15 feet, six inches at the Arcadia Invitational. Ethan Ostrom went over the bar at 12 feet for second place. West Valley won both the boys and girls meets.

Gaul also won the triple jump with 42 feet - 7½ inches and took second in the 110 hurdles at 15.91. The girls scored 100 points, Corning had 39 and Central Valley 19.

Eagle Nichole Barry won the 100 hurdles at 17.6, the high jump at 4-10 and the 300 hurdles in 50.5. Teammate Ashley Turner won the shot put at 33 feet - 7½ inches and the discus at 117-2. Michelle Johnson took the 800 in 2 minutes - 22 seconds and the 3,200 in 14:07.
