The world and I have watched demonstrations this week against the abuse of human rights by China, the Chinese invasion of Tibet, and the abuse of the Tibetan people by Chinese forces. I find it appalling. Yet, even as they wreak their injustices and cruelty, China is this years’ host for the Olympics. How hypocritical can they be?
The Olympics symbolize and promote the cooperation and peaceful commerce between nations throughout the world.
Yet, I am horrified by televised news accounts of Chinese troops in Tibet and the way they treat Tibetan citizens. I recall Tiananmen Square and what happened to Chinese protesters there.
When Bill Clinton foisted Most Favored Nation trading status on China, it allowed the importation of Chinese goods into the United States without import duties, I protested vehemently to the authorities. They replied that it would benefit Americans because they could buy lower-priced Chinese goods. I disagreed that this was a real benefit. Time and events have proven that any benefits were exaggerated.
A lot of those imports are shoddy. They go to pieces quickly and must be replaced. We have seen repeatedly where the quality of those goods is poor. Proceeds from these sales went to building up China, especially its military technology and armaments. China has made veiled threats, even to the point of threatening to bomb Los Angeles. They are not our friends.
They bought American businesses and properties here in the U.S. and have loaned billions of dollars to our government. There will come a time when we must pay the piper. What will we do then? Our government and many of its people are like the proverbial ostrich that buries its head under the sand to hide.
Add the fact that U.S. manufacturers took entire factories out of the country causing American workers to lose the best jobs as well as incomes from products that were once made here. Now, the money goes out of our country even as America’s economy shrinks.
I watch as our government does nothing about the despots, tyrants and totalitarians and I shudder. I remember the Bible quote, “... and the pride of their power shall be broken.”
What will we do then?
