All-digital TV transition confusing to some
The FCC-mandated transition from analog to digital television on February 18, 2009, has brought on a great deal of confusion, as an overwhelming majority of television transmitters are not full-powered, and therefore are exempt from that law.
The law requires only full-power stations to turn off their analog signal.
“The advertisements you’ve seen that say your TV won’t work are not true,” said Doug Holroyd, general manager of KCVU-TV, Fox-30.
Only five out of 92 analog transmitters in six northern California counties will be turned off in favor of digital broadcasting next year, Holroyd said.
The station’s low-power channels — 21, 22, 36, 48, 17, 27 and 35 — remain analog.
Likewise, Redding-based KRCR-TV, Channel 7, will turn to digital only, while its translators will remain analog, said Ray Smith, chief engineer of the ABC network affiliate.
