Two Cottonwood students picked
Teens to take part in model State legislature
Young Cottonwood residents Charity Groff and Justin Zacharias, both recent graduates of West Valley High School, were selected Tuesday, July 29, as student senators to represent, respectively, California’s 3rd and 34th Senatorial Districts during Sacramento Leadership Experience (SLE).
Conducted at the state capitol in August, the SLE is a prestigious four-day activity during which selected high school students from throughout the state get to live the life of a California State Senator, engaging in a living laboratory of government, public policy and civics.
Participants at this conclave learn about California government operations, the legislative process, public policy development and study major issues facing California’s citizenry.
As the week progresses, student senators take up pieces of mock legislation, garner support for the best ideas, then vote on those bills that make it to the State Senate floor.
The experience is designed to increase understanding of government functions and policies, create awareness of issues and stimulate interest in becoming active, concerned and participating citizens.
