A house fire on Ceres Court in the Churn Creek Bottom area sparked a series of spot fires as a brisk northerly wind blew embers south amid 105 degree heat at 3:05 p.m. The house was owned by Gary and Peg Singleton, according to neighbor Kevin Peel.

"They hardly had time to get themselves and their dogs out," neighbor Vic Reierson said. "It was totally engulfed by the time the firefighters got there."

Evacuations have been ordered by the sheriff's department for Tucker Lane and Riata Drive near Tucker Oaks Golf Course. Anderson Union High School, at 1471 Ferry St., was designated as the Red Cross evacuation center.

Up to 18 acres have burned as of 4:43 p.m.

Fighting the fire are 25 engines, 5 tankers, 4 crews, 2 bull dozers and aircraft.
