Timothy Gaeddert, 51, of Redding was taken to Shasta Regional Medical Center for major injuries after his silver truck veered off northbound I-5 and struck a tree near the on-ramp to Riverside Drive in Anderson at 2:40 p.m., Dec. 26. According to witnesses, he was driving with the speed of traffic before he "just veered off the road," said CHP Sergeant Brent Giordano, who added that the vehicle could have hit the tree at 60 mph.

Gaeddert was wearing his seatbelt and the vehicle's airbag deployed.

The victim suffered scratches to his face and arms, but was conscious and talking to officers on scene. The driver likely suffered major internal injuries, according to Anderson Fire Protection District Fire Marshall Howard Fincher.

Giordano did not smell alcohol at the scene.

Paramedics and firefighters from Anderson Fire Protection District used the Jaws of Life to open the driver's side door to extricate the victim onto a stretcher.
