The West Valley Eagles varsity football team ended their season with a 9-3 record. They lost only one game at home, and beat several Division I football teams.

West Valley's football team played their hearts out Wednesday, Nov. 28 during the Northern Section Div. II championship football game. But they fell short of the victory when the Eagles' hopes of upsetting nemesis Sutter at the Huskies' Wayne Gadberry Field were dashed 12-7.

The Eagles looked to be in great possession to avenge last season's slim 21-20 defeat in the title game after taking a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter and playing stifling football on the defensive side.

However, the Huskies (11-1) held the Eagles to just 38 yards and two first downs on six possessions in the second half while scoring twice.

The Eagles did get the ball back with just over a minute to play in the game after forcing the Huskies to turn the ball over on downs, however, they couldn't get anything going as time ran out.

"It was a great game and you hate to be on this side of it," Grandell said. "We still had a chance at the end and it was exciting. The kids played their guts out."

Grandell said in his decades of coaching, this team stands out as being one of the toughest.

"This is a tough group mentally and a tough group physically," he said.
