Redding Record Searchlight Sports Editor Aaron Williams put it mildly when he said the Anderson High School girls’ basketball team has a “37-33 squeaker over Mount Shasta” in the opening round of the Northern Section Division IV playoffs.
The Anderson girls were just not themselves in the game.
They started out with a 10-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game against Mount Shasta and then the Bears kicked into gear. In the final eight minutes Mt. Shasta might have been able to take Anderson if they could have gotten a hold of the ball.
Anderson shot 15 for 65 for the game. Unless you were there, the third quarter for Anderson should not be talked about.
Amrallina Rowland and Molly Morton were looking for the plays under the basket, but they did not come as the Mt. Shasta team had two and sometimes three girls covering them.
Megan Remley scored 12 points in the first half and it helped the 24-15 lead at halftime.
Rowland did pick up a missed shot and then scored keeping Anderson’s lead with under five minutes left to play. The voices from the visiting cheering section from Mt. Shasta was deafening, and their team seemed charged by their noise.
At the end of the game, Mt. Shasta’s Molly Abbott scored and then two others added points to bring the game to within five points of the leading Cubs. Then, a Bear scored another basket to make it 37-33 with less than a minute to go. Anderson did group together to stop the Bear onslaught.
Morton had 12 points for Anderson and Rowland 11. Corinna Asher, usually deadly on her 3-point shots, went zero for 10 for the night, and the rest of the team did not do much better.
The Winters team and the No. 4 Corning team played on Friday with Winters coming out on top.
The Anderson girls played Winters last night, but the game results were not available at press time.
