District Attorney investigators stopped a vehicle Thursday, Jan. 17, for a parole check of a passenger when the driver accelerated to speeds surpassing 100 mph on Interstate 5. Authorities later learned that the driver, George Kenneth Bremer, 20, of Nevada, was driving a stolen rental car from Nevada with Arizona plates.
The D.A. investigators gave up the high-speed chase since they are not qualified to pursue at those speeds, according to D.A. Investigator Dan Karshner. The California Highway Patrol was contacted to resume the chase, including the use of CHP’s helicopter.
Before CHP or any law enforcement agency could apprehend the vehicle, a 911 call was made from a house on Sylvia Lane. The caller reported that someone knocked at the door and asked to use the phone “because they were being chased by the police.” The suspects were reported to be non-violent.
A female, whose name law enforcement could not supply, was arrested at the house at 10:44 a.m.
Bremer then apparently went on foot to Frozen Gourmet, Inc., on Airport Road and stole a Hyundai Tiburon.
The CHP resumed chasing Bremer, who ran stop lights and drove on the shoulder at 120 mph while passing vehicles.
Bremer returned to I-5 and drove south to the Deschutes Road exit. He drove onto Rhonda Road and stopped on a dirt road. According to CHP Officer Kurt Heuer, he was arrested while running towards the Wal-Mart area at
10:51 a.m.
Bremer is being held without bail at the Shasta County Jail for willful disregard for the safety of others while fleeing pursuit, two counts of vehicle theft, obstruction of a public officer and violation of parole.
