The Anderson high school girls basketball team lost its league-opener on Jan. 11 to West Valley. Then, on Jan. 15, the visiting Central Valley Lady Falcons took a 69-34 beating at the hands of the Lady Cubs.
Getting back in gear after the holidays is rough on most, but the Lady Cubs did not look like they had lost their momentem as they opened up against the CV team.
The roaring 20s, as indicated by their jersey numbers, consisting of Corinna Asher (20), Amrallina Rowland (21), Molly Morton (22), Megan Remley (23) and Halie VanEperen (24) came on the court like seasoned professionals as the Central Valley girls looked at their dribbling and shooting with awe.
Rowland, of course, leads the Cub pack with 96 2-pointers for a total of 223. Morton has 59 2-pointers for a total of 141 points and Remley is not far behind her with 33 2-pointers and 23 3-pointers for 139 points. VanEperen brings in the fourth high points with 68 total and 30 2-pointers. Asher, back after an injury, has 16 2-point shots, one 3-point shot for a total of 39 for the 20’s girls. The Lady Falcons never came closer than 10 points to the Cubs. In the third quarter is when CV first started to adjust to the Cub’s pace.
Remley had two 3-point shots to bring the women into the forth quarter at 49-27 and she had a nightly total of 10 points. Rowland racked up 24 points and Morton ended up with 11.
The Anderson Cubs and the West Valley Eagles have each won a game this year, but West Valley has the leage game win. The rivalry continues on Feb. 1.
Coach Jeff Osborn wants the section title and it would make Anderson a two out of three year winner.
Last year, the Yreka Miners took Anderson in a 62-50 semifinal game as they went for the Division IV title.
This year the Cub women want that Northern Athletic League title as well as the Northern Section Division IV title in their resume.
The Cubs went up against the Lassen Grizzlies last Thursday and came out with a 56-46 win. Rowland, again, led with 16 points as Morton and Remley each had 13 more to their credit.
As of last Thursday Anderson was 2-1 in league play and 14-3 total.
Yesterday Anderson traveled to Yreka but no score was available at press time. This Friday, Jan. 25, the Lady Cubs will visit Corning.
