Fire Update: Gusty, 35 mph NW winds expected for Wednesday

Cal Fire has designated Wednesday as red flag warning for fire weather, with winds from the northwest expected to gust up to 35 miles an hour. One cabin was reported lost in the Moon fire, which is affecting the Platina/Ono area. As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Cal Fire reported having lost ground against the fire, having demoted its containment to 42 percent.

As of Tuesday mandatory evacuations in Igo and Ono areas included Rainbow Lake Road, Sunny Hill Road, Devil's Hill Road, Rector Road, Buell Road, Zogg Mine Road, South Fork Road and Archer Road among others.

Effective at 11 a.m. Tuesday road closures include Platina Road at Bully Choop Road, Placer Road at Cloverdale Road, Placer Road at Clear Creek, Platina, Gas Point Roads, Lower Gas Point Road at Gas point Road south and north ends.

Old Shasta and Rock Creek Road and adjacent areas near Whiskeytown National Recreation Area are under mandatory evacuation. Road blocks have been set at Rock Creek Road and Highway 299, Rock Creek Road and Iron Mountain Road, and Rock Creek Road at Granite Road. These closures were effective as of 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

A total of 18,598 acres have been burned in the Moon fire, with 56,177 acres burned in the Shasta Lightning Complex fire.

As of Wednesday at 3:15, 200 people had been evacuated from the Ono area, with 25 people checked into an evacuation center at Shasta Learning Center, 2200 Eureka Way in Redding, according to Jim Dahl, executive director of the Shasta Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

"We can handle about 80 to 100 people at that facility and another 100 at (Shasta High School)," Dahl said.
