Celebrities, dancers raise funds for two good causes

Shasta Family YMCA and the Shasta Women’s Refuge teamed up again this year to bring back “Dancing with the Stars” on Saturday, July 12, at Redding’s Cascade Theatre.

Among the male stars, Shasta County Supervisor Les Baugh represented the South County against the likes of broadcaster Don Burton from Redding Radio and Kurt Starman, Redding’s city manager. Baugh was eliminated after the first dance number, a waltz.

Also representing the South County were two women, gourmet cook and online columnist Doni Greenberg, also eliminated after the first round, and Tracy Edwards, chief executive officer of Redding Rancheria, who eventually won the competition by pulling enough audience votes to defeat another crowd favorite, KRCR, Channel 7’s weather forecaster, Chita Johnson.

Each star paired with a local dance professional performed two dance routines in an attempt to win votes from audience members and celebrity judges. Audience members purchased their votes in the form of tickets sold by the yard and individually placed in several glass jars appropriately labeled with each star’s photograph

Tickets to the fundraiser were $30 each. All proceeds were split equally between the Shasta Family YMCA and Shasta Women’s Refuge.
