Anne Schofield, a 2008 graduate and valedictorian of Anderson New Technology High School, recently received the 19th ZoAnn McCain Journalism Scholarship.

Schofield’s “impressive oral interview and portfolio of grades, letters of recommendation from school representatives and samples of writing” were cited by Evelyn French as reasons for winning the coveted local award.

ZoAnn McCain was the formidable editor of the Valley Press during the 1970s. She is arguably best remembered as the first woman permitted inside the racing pits during competition after she filed a lawsuit against the local racing association for discriminating against female reporters.

When the Valley Press was sold to the Valley Post, McCain went on to become an aide for then-Assemblyman Stan Statham.
