Shasta College offers fire fighting class

Responding to the current high demand for fire fighters and in anticipation of future needs for the same, Shasta College is teaming up with the U.S. Forest Service to offer a basic Wild Land Fire Orientation course.

The course will be repeated as often as needed, a college spokesman said.

The refresher training will focus on safety issues for fire line personnel dealing with operations and decision making. Refresher training will ensure firefighters have information regarding current initiatives and any changes in policy or guidance. Refresher training will help fire fighters recognize and mitigate risk, maintain safe practices, reduce accidents and minimize near misses.

Students being sought include those with heavy equipment experience including the operation of graders, bulldozers and other fire line tools. The goal of this class is to produce trained workers who can aid firefighters in combating wildfires. Another objective is to better understand and apply basic safety principles for wild land fire fighting. For more information, contact the Shasta College Fire Academy at (530) 242-7583.
