Race for Anderson City Council begins

As of Friday, July 18, first-time candidate James Yarbrough and incumbents Phil Burnett and Melissa Hunt have each filed candidacy papers with Shasta County’s Elections Department to run for three open seats on the Anderson City Council.

The filing period opened July 14 and continues through Aug. 8, unless one of the three incumbents does not file for re-election, according to county elections clerk Kaye McShane.

The remaining incumbent whose seat is up for election belongs to vice-mayor Norma Comnick.

Burnett is completing his second four-year term on the council. Hunt will face her first election as she was appointed in January 2007 to fill the unexpired term of Les Baugh, who was elected to the Shasta County Board of Supervisors. Comnick was appointed to a seat on the council in April 1996. She won election in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004.

Each council candidate is required to pay his or her own costs for the printing of any candidate statement that he or she may want included in the election pamphlet sent out to voters by the Shasta County Elections Department.
