GROWING ANDERSON: Joan Caldwell reviews materials on mixed-use planning in the city.

Anderson and county officials, along with a few residents, attended a meeting at the teen center on Thursday, July 17, regarding mixed-use zoning and the future of Anderson’s downtown.

The area under consideration for rezoning include the region bounded by North Street, South Street, Interstate 5 and Douglas Street.

Jeff Beiswenger from Pacific Municipal Consultants discussed the importance of “creating a downtown experience.” The downtown should include street trees, benches, to encourage pedestrian traffic. Public Health chimed in on the benefits of a downtown that encourages more walking and bicycling in lieu of driving.

Beiswenger added that Anderson already has wide streets that make those amenities easy to add. The zoning would also help guide private development to follow those preferred standards.

“I want to find out what the plans are,” said Joan Caldwell, a resident of one of Anderson’s senior living complexes. “I’d like to see more sidewalks and retain the old buildings or at least refurbish them.”

The next meeting to be held in a couple months would take the general principles of mixed use discussed at Thursday’s meeting and apply them.
