Nothing could prevent the Happy Valley Fire Department’s 22nd annual barbecue from being a success. Not smoke in the air, humidity or even a structure fire in the midst of the proceedings could dim the spirits of the crowd.
On Saturday, July 19th, the engine that had been assigned to a strike team, was suddenly released. This was great news, because those firefighters would be able to participate in the biggest fund-raiser of the year. Or so they thought!
Just as the auction was in full swing, a fire broke out in a home off of Happy Valley Road. Three engines and the water tender headed for the fire and were soon joined by units from Anderson, Cottonwood, Redding, West Valley and Cal Fire. One half of the Happy Valley firefighters had to abandon their barbecue duties.
But the festivities continued without a hitch as family members and friends of the Fire Department stepped up to the plate. These dedicated people manned the booths the entire evening, without a break, selling tickets, running games and hauling supplies. It was amazing how many people came up to offer their assistance.
With all the fires burning in the North State, the preparations for the biggest event of the year had been put on the back burner as firefighters were out battling blazes. Door-to-door ticket sales, usually early in July, took place a few days prior to the Bar-B-Que. That and the state of the economy had firefighters doubting the number of people who would actually show up.
But the Community really came through in their support of the Fire Department. Hundreds of people poured onto the grounds early in the evening and many were still there at midnight. Auction items were carted off by happy bidders and a raffle was held with winners receiving two rifles and a camping package. Children hunted for candy in a haystack, bounced in the inflated house and kept cool on the water slide. Much of their entertainment was financed by a gift from the Sierra Pacific Foundation. Adults and kids alike took advantage of the live music offered by LTD. Others competed in a game of horseshoes or just relaxed and visited with friends. Everyone enjoyed their tri-tip dinners. Approximately 850 were served.
Firefighters returned from the structure fire around 10 p.m., bringing a few members of the other departments with them. They were able to enjoy a late dinner and some much needed rest. All in all, it was a crazy but highly enjoyable evening.
The Happy Valley Volunteers would like to thank the members of the community for their continued support. Also, a special “thanks” to those who worked so hard to make the barbecue a huge success.
