South County cowboys and cowgirls had the chance to broaden their rodeo horizons and attend the College National Finals Rodeo, the Silver State International Rodeo and Wrangler Junior High School National Finals Rodeo in Wyoming, Nevada and New Mexico respectively.
At the college level, Danny Webb of Cottonwood attended the College National Finals in Casper, Wyo., where he participated in the bareback event riding for Feather River College of Quincy. Webb’s scores were as follows:
First go-round: 77 points; Second go-round: 68.5 points; Third go-round: 64 points.
Webb finished 14th overall.
At the high school level, Callie Anthony of Red Bluff and Katie Lear of Anderson, both West Valley students, attended the Silver State International Rodeo in Fallon, Nev.
Callie Anthony’s events, times and places are as follows:
Barrel racing, first go-round: 18.053 seconds; second go-round: 25.12 seconds; for a total of 43.173 seconds placing second in the event.
Goat tying: first go-round: 15.45 seconds, second go-round: 8.71 seconds for a total of 24.16 seconds, placing 45th in the event.
Breakaway roping: first go-round 4.44 seconds, second go-round: no time for a total of 4.44 seconds, placing 34th in the event.
Team roping: Chant DeForest, header, and Callie Anthony, heeler, first go-round: 10.46 seconds, second go-round: no time for a total of 10.46 seconds, placing 18th in the event.
Katie Lear’s events, times and places are as follows:
Breakaway roping: first go-round: 4.73 seconds; second go-round: 3.63 seconds for a total of 8.36 seconds, placing 13th in the event.
Girls cutting: first go-round 60 points, second go-round 72 points, short go-round, 63 point for a total of 195 points, placing 14th in the event.
The California High School Rodeo Association team placed sixth over all with 2,210 points.
Next years Silver State International Rodeo will take place July 4-9 in Fallon.
The Wrangler Junior High School Rodeo District One cowboys and cowgirls made a good showing at the National Finals in Gallup, N.M.
Kayla Nichol of Cottonwood participated in the barrel racing event. Her times and overall placing follows: first go-round: 17.679 seconds; second go-round: 27.4 seconds for a total of 45.079 seconds, placing 130th in the event.
Kyle Brown of McArthur participated in the boys’ goat tying. His times and overall placing is as follows: first go-round: 15.783 seconds; second go-round: 13.515 seconds, for a total of 29.298 in two, placing 61st in the event.
Will Johnson of Etna participated in the Chute Dogging, times and overall placing are as follows: first go-round: 4.981 seconds, second go-round: 2.417 seconds for a total of 7.398 seconds, placing 27th in the event.
CJ Cash of Grenada, header, and Sterling Humphrey of McArthur, heeler, participated in the team roping event. The boys received no time in the first go-round and a time of 11.577 in the second go-round, placing 35th in the event with a total of 11.577 seconds.
The Wrangler Junior High School Rodeo Team earned a combined total of 3,380 points. The California boys team placed 17th with a point total of 1,375 points, the girls’ team placed 6th with a point total of 2,355 points.
On their way to the High School National Finals for California District One for the National Competition July 20 are: Cody Higgins of Red Bluff, bareback riding; Jordan Spears of Redding, bull riding; Larry Ferreira of Fort Jones, steer wrestling; Daniel Ferreira of Fort Jones, tie-down roping; Adam Andreini of Red Bluff, tie-down roping; Dean Autry of Fort Jones, boys’ cutting; Bliss Bidwell of Hat Creek, girls’ goat tying; Rylee Lamson of Corning, barrel racing; R.C Landingham of Pendleton, Ore., will be participating in the bareback riding, boys cutting and bull riding. Sibling team Larry Ferreira (header) and Daniel Ferreira (heeler) of Fort Jones will compete in the team roping, together for the last time in high school competition as Larry Ferreira is a senior and is currently pursuing one of the top spots in the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association in the steer wrestling. He is currently ranked second in the state a that level. His older brother, Jonathan Ferreira, is in first place.
With the National High School Finals Rodeo coming to a close, the District One cowboys and cowgirls came home victorious as did the State of California. In each event, there were over 130 participants. The results are as follows:
California had a combined total with Districts one through nine, winning eighth place, with a total of 4,439.583 points. The boys’ California team placed fifth overall with 2,524.583 points, the girls placed eleventh with 1,915 points.
Larry Ferreira of Fort Jones placed sixth in the “all around cowboy” category with 640 points. Hollie Kucera of Atherton also placed sixth in the “all around cowgirl,” division.
Larry Ferreira, Fort Jones: steer wrestling — 3.501, 4.209 and 20.072 for a total of 27.782 seconds. Ferreira placed 17th in the event.
Daniel Ferreira, Fort Jones: tie-down roping — 9.257, 13.006 seconds and a no time on his other runs. Ferreira placed 18th in the event with 27.782 seconds.
The team roping combination of brothers Larry and Daniel Ferreira placed 35th in the team roping event with a time of 6.349 on one head.
Dean Autry, Fort Jones: boys’ cutting — first run 214 points, second run 202 points, for a total of 416 points, placing 23rd in the event.
Cody Higgins, Red Bluff: bareback riding — 60 points on first go-round, 63 on the second go-round for a total of 123 points, placing 23rd in the event.
Adam Andrini, Red Bluff: tie-down roping — 15.505 on one go-round, placing 105th in the event.
Rylee Lamson, Corning: barrel racing — 18.891 and 18.261 seconds placing 96th in the event.
RC Landingham, Pendleton, Ore.: bareback — first go-round, 65 points; second go-round 64 points for a total of 129 points earning 21st place in the event. Boys’ cutting: first go-round 212 points, second go-round 185 points for a total of 397 points for 56th place.
Bull riding: first go-round, 72 points for 26th place.
