Happy Valley Pride: July 30, 2008

Recently, I had to take my car in for a 100,000-mile check-up. When I purchased the car in 2003, it had just 30,000 miles on it, so that means I am driving 15,000 miles a year. With the price of gas, I think I had better stop driving so much. Anyway, I digress. I took my car to Miller Auto Center and while I was there, I found a flyer that I want to share.

Booster Seat Giveaway! Saturday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Miller’s Collision Center, 1150 California St., Redding.

Free Evenflo backless booster seats will be available. Children who use the booster seats must weigh between 40 and 80 pounds. The vehicle must have lap and shoulder belts as well as head protection in the rear seat.

The program is sponsored by the California Highway Patrol, the California Office of Traffic Safety and Miller Collision Center. Help me spread the word to parents of small children so that they know about this program.

I recently received a bulletin from the Farm Service Agency. If you lost crops in the late spring freeze and are interested to know whether you might be eligible for crop insurance to help pay for some of your losses, call the agency at 226-2568. The eligibility buy-in deadline is Sept. 16. The cost is $100 per crop. When I called the number to find out whether my different berries are considered one crop or three crops, they were not able to immediately answer my question. I am also concerned about orchards that may have more than one variety of cherry or other fruit. Their advice is to call them, ask the question, then give them a few days to read the information and find an answer. If it is a typical government program, the person probably looks through a book the size of a phone directory to find the answer.

Are you interested in becoming a part of a study by the Cottonwood Creek Watershed Group?

The study is to document small-scale agricultural producers. Through the use of test sites, small-scale producers who participate will commit to begin implementing feasible sustainable practices with guidance and support of the watershed group and its technical advisory agencies. Producers will also serve on the sustainability team and closely participate in all aspects of this project. If interested, call Jan Lopez at 347-6637 or 396-2685.

I’ve got a yard of rock to upload, so I am out the door. Recycle, pray, do good deeds and avoid evil. Thank you for all the encouragement you give me to write this article.
