The No. 1 Anderson Lady Cubs played No. 3 Yreka Miners last Saturday at Chico State University in the D-IV game 53-45.
Molly Morton, Amrallina Rowland and Megan Remley, Corinna Asher and Courtney Baker led the attack against Yreka. The Yreka Miners, in the 2006-07 season, beat the Lady Cubs 62-50 in last year’s semifinal game, and desperately wanted to do it again. The Miners had then gone on to take Gridley 67-57 in the championship.
Yreka, 16-6 for the season, has now suffered the third loss this year by the Lady Cubs.
This was the Cub’s second Northern Section Division IV title in three years at Chico State, and Anderson was not going to let it happen to them again. Asher had six of her 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting in the first quarter to keep Anderson going. Remley had a 3-point shot in each quarter, shooting 4-of-10 from the outside and had a team-high of 17 points. Morton had 16 points and 12 of them were in the second half of the game. She also had nine rebounds. Rowland had four points and five rebounds.
Stats also indicated that Anderson outshot the Miners 34 percent to 25 percent.
Yreka had led 16-13 after the first quarter, and then the Lady Cubs took over by halftime. It was 39-30 at the end of the third quarter.
