The No. 1 team in the NAL Division III, the West Valley Lady Eagles, were going for a sixth section girls’ basketball title last Friday at Foothill High School, and they got it.
The No. 2 Oroville Tigers have a 5-9 league record and are 14-13 overall in the Eastern Athletic League this season. The Tigers’ only other encounter with West Valley this year saw them go down in defeat last Dec. 4 as the Lady Eagles beat Oroville, 40-36. Oroville had taken Enterprise 59-53 in the semifinals, stopping EHS’s fourth straight years of Hornets and Eagles playing each other in the finals.
The Tigers went into the Friday, Feb. 29 game with a two-game winning streak. Over the past two months they lost eight of their nine games.
The Eagles were up for a Tiger kill.
The West Valley High School girls’ basketball team made it two in a row with a Northern Section Division III title. They had a 45-32 victory over Oroville at Foothill High School.
Tabytha Wampler had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Mikalyn Wintle had nine points and six rebounds. Lauren Swetland had seven points and 10 rebounds and Morgan McCarley had eight points.
There were 28 turnovers for Oroville and 27 for West Valley. The Lady Eagles were ahead 20-14 at halftime and the kept up the pressure. Wampler signaled her teammates to keep the ball low as the leaping Tigers kept going for the high passes. Once they started to pass the ball lower the baskets started to mount. The Lady Eagles started to pull ahead before the Tigers realized what was happening.
Katie Brandt had 12 points for the Tigers while Cheryl Ridge and Katie Mayberry had five points each.
Coach Gary Memeo, and his Northern Athletic League West Valley champions, had one of the strongest inside games in section history and this was the first time the Lady Eagles took two straight section titles since 1995 and again in 1996.
