After the Fact: A quiet week - (yeah, right)

I sometimes get asked the question – “why are the pictures that you put up on the Internet or in the newspaper so grainy?”

A very high ISO (sensitivity) setting on cameras cause grainy pictures. One hundred ISO, or lower, is a good setting for normal shots. High settings are for low light and shooting in strange lighting (a gymnasium or under stadium lights). My aperture / shutter speed is set to 1,600 to try and stop the action of the of the players as it happens.

I like to shoot at the high ISO setting to avoid the ‘flash’ in the player’s eyes – it can be very distracting. Players and spectators usually do not realize that I am shooting at a game – unless it was like, a month or so ago, that I was shooting in the Anderson High School gym and bumped an electrical cover box during a particularly quite time in the game. The cover went clanging to the floor as I stood there (as Mike Koontz said - “red as a beet”).

The issue of the event is young athletes who are doing their best for their school – not some bald-headed old man shooting pictures.

I try to keep a low profile so the students are what is being recorded for prosperity. It is their time and place in history and I am just trying to record it.

Sorry if my photos are grainy at times.
