Green light for Saturday nights at Shasta Raceway

Another great night of racing as Shasta ran its seventh points race of the year. Last night saw the first of two races scheduled for the Pro 4 Modifieds.

Eleven of these sleek open wheel cars competed on the big asphalt oval last night. And these cars are fast, with lap times nearing that of their larger counterpoints, the Modifieds, but with more agility to make quick side-by-side passes. They make for some edge-of-the-seat racing.

Kevin Dutcher who is usually on the other side of the wall being crew for Bill Binns made his racing debut last night and took home the hardware for the Trophy Dash. Ken Gifford had a double crown night by making the fastest lap of the pack, and winning a very racy main event. The Pro 4 Mods are slated to return to Shasta on July 26.

Last night nine roaring Late Models took to the track including Derek Copeland making only his second Late Model appearance ever, driving the #77 Hen House car sponsored by Lyle Lindsey. Last week the youngster turned some heads as he took his skills as a Champion Legends Driver and Champion Outlaw Kart Driver, and he put them to use in the big late model as he took the honors of winning the Trophy Dash.

This week the 17-year-old held off all the veterans who were looking for anyway around his car. Power, strong driving and knowing just where to put that sleek blue #77 car in each turn allowed Copeland hold off all advances. Congratulations to Derek on his first, of which we are sure will be many, Late Model race wins.

Meanwhile behind him the pack was racing hard and the action got dicey. There were several spins and cautions as the competition heated up. Gary Pyszora won the earlier Trophy Dash competing against his son Alan.

The Bomber Division saw nine drivers hit the pavement and each other in another great round of Bomber racing. Bobby “Corndog“ Crowell came out on top in the feature event which saw a lot of bumpin’ and bangin’ as the drivers hurled their behemoths around the tight turns. Duane Hoffman had a great run and took the honors of winning the Trophy Dash.

Dale Stelt returned to race the Mini Stocks and quickly set fast time in qualifying and won the Main Event just over Nancy Wright. Who, by the way won her first trophy dash of the year. Congratulations on a great race. Scotty Murphy who has had such a great season had his night end early as a car spun in front of him coming into the backstretch, and Scotty had no where to go except full-speed into the side of the car. The impact wreaked some major havoc on Murphy’s #77. We hope he gets his car fixed by the next race.

There was yet another night of jamb-packed excitement in the Hornet division. With such a large field of the little yellow wonders the racing is a ton of fun. Points and results for these guys will be available later this week at www.shastaracewaypark.net.
