Birthday party turns tragic with ATV death

Foothill High School student Steven Crean, 16, of Palo Cedro died April 4 in an accident with an all-terrain vehicle he was riding while at a birthday party of Travis Richards.

Crean had backed up the ATV up a steep enbankment when he fell over the handlebars and the ATV landed on top of him, according to a CHP report.

"He did it once, and then when he did it again it flipped," said Glenn Hawes, who owns the Palo Cedro property where Richard's birthday was held and the accident occurred. "It's devastating and so preventable."

"Had (Crean) been wearing a helmet and protective safety equipment, the severity of the injuries could have been greatly reduced," according to the CHP report.

"He was the nicest kid," Hawes said. "They come out here all the time and hunt."
