MOVING DIRT:
Heavy equipment scraped off the old field’s surface last week in anticipation of installing the school’s new regulation track and football field by graduation.

As students and staff at Anderson Union High School arrive on campus each day, they've witnessed new sections of their stadium cropping up before their eyes.

"It's been very exciting for staff," said AUHS principal Scott Booth. "For about a month and a half, every day you come in there would be something different."

Construction of the home-side bleachers is almost complete. The archway is finished, a walkway is being built and preparations are being made on the ground for a new running track and all-weather football playing surface.

As the new stadium's elements went up, students and staff also witnessed the old stadium disappear.

"There's been moments it's been sad. You see the snack bar being torn down or you see the old goal posts go down. Those things have been here for so long. You are losing a piece of history," principal Booth said. "But it's nice too, because you know everything is going to be brand new," he said.

Booth said the stadium is on track to be the site for graduation. Staff had originally planned for the stadium to be in good enough shape to hold the ceremony, but now, construction officials said it could be completely finished in time.

"We are going to have graduation there and I fully expect it to be done," Booth said.

"These guys, Dutton Construction, have been a fabulous construction crew. They don't waste time. And rain or shine, they are out there working on something," he said.

The construction has caused little disturbance to everyday school activities, the principal reported.

"It's been a very smooth process. There's maybe some dirt or debris left here or there. But that comes with any construction," he said.

The official Bob Reid Stadium dedication will be held on Sept. 4. It will be the opening day of the football season.

"We are having a triple-header that night starting at approximately 3:30 p.m. with the freshman. We will have the dedication for the Bob Reid stadium in between the junior varsity and varsity games," Booth said.

"Then at 7:30 will be the varsity football game. At halftime will be the selection of our homecoming queen, which will also include honoring past queens from as far back as the 1940s."
