Phone survey to determine needs of youth in South County area

A survey to determine what South County residents think about community health issues, including safety and availability of healthy food, is sponsored by Anderson Partnership for Healthy Children (APHC). About 500 residents in the South County would be contacted by telephone in the coming weeks.

The APHC conducted the first such survey 10 years ago, and the agency incorporated the responses into its 10 year strategic plan, according to APHC Director Michele Erickson. In that survey, the community responded that there was little focus on adolescent youth.

"The prior focus was on young children," Erickson said. "People said they were concerned about adolescent youth, drugs and alcohol issues, and there was nothing for (adolescents) to do."

The response from the survey germinated support for the idea of the now-built Anderson Teen Center, she said.

The survey results are also helpful to secure grant funding in the South County, as grantors want to know what the community says it needs, according to Erickson.

Anyone desiring to be included in the survey should contact APHC at 378-6060.
