When the apostle Peter instructs us to be diligent to make certain about God's calling and choosing us, (2 Peter 1:10) he is not challenging us to see if we are saved or prove that we are saved.
He is challenging us to confirm or verify to all who observe us (cf. Matthew 5:16; John 13:35; 1 Peter 2:12) that we are truly called and chosen to rule with Christ.
Speaking of eternal reward, Jesus said, "For many are called but few are chosen" [to rule]. (Matthew 22:14)
While choosing precedes calling to eternal salvation (Romans 8:30; Ephesians 1:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14), calling precedes choosing when speaking of being chosen to rule with Christ.
Only born-again people have the opportunity to confirm that they are in a position to reign with Christ. (cf. 2 Timothy 2:12)
Peter tells believers to develop and maintain virtuous deeds, practical knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection and love. (2 Peter 1:5-7)
Christians who are increasing in these qualities will be fruitful, but he who lacks these virtues is said to be blind or shortsighted. (1 Peter 1:8- 9)
As long as we practice these things, we will not stumble and run the risk of losing the rewards we are called to obtain. (cf. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27)
Then, like the apostle Paul (2 Timothy 4:6-8), we can look forward to a wonderfully rich and joyful entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, (2 Peter 1:11) as opposed to a just-barely-made-it entrance. (1 Corinthians 3:15)
