Unemployment hit a 24-year high in Shasta County in March, the state Employment Development Department reported today.
Shasta County's unemployment rate climbed to 16.8 percent, a six-tenths of a percent increase over February, which had a rate of 16.2 percent.
The new figure is the highest employment rate Shasta County has seen in 24 years. The last time it was higher was in January 1985 when unemployment hit 17.2 percent.
The number of unemployed in Shasta County now stands at 14,400, up from the 13,800 unemployed in February.
By way of comparison, the unemployment rate for March in Tehama County stood at 14.8 percent, in Siskiyou County it was at 18.7 percent and in Trinity County it was at 21.9 percent.
Statewide, the unemployment rate for March was 11.2 percent, up from 10.6 percent last month.
