Agencies honor leaders in youth enrichment

The Asset in Action Partnership of Shasta County announced the names 2009 Asset Champions. The following individuals were recognized for their outstanding work with youth at the third annual Asset Celebration on April 23.

The Assets in Action Partnership is a group of adults and youth who have come together to highlight how building assets in our newborn to 18-year-olds helps better prepare them for adulthood. The Partnership's Action Teams address the areas of 0-5 (Years), Business, Education, Faith, Government, Law Enforcement, Media and Youth. Our community can build assets in youth by assuring that caring adults provide meaningful activities with positive expectations.

The Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets<0x00AE> are concrete, common sense, positive experiences and qualities essential to raising successful young people.

Linda McBride Award:

John Barry, Shasta County Public Health - Barry's passion to promote and activate the developmental assets is contagious. It is impossible to be around him and not feel like we all can make a difference for our youth and our community and be motivated to do so. He has been a pioneer in bring awareness to Developmental Assets in Shasta County. Barry goes above and beyond to incorporate and practice assets with youth in the community.

Positive expectations:

Michelle Lingenfelter, Anderson Middle School Resource Officer - Anderson Police Officer Lingenfelter goes out of her way to help others at Anderson Middle School and in Anderson. She takes time to sit and have lunch and talk. She is supportive, caring and encouraging when listening to life experiences.

Community Values Youth:

Tom Armelino, Shasta County Superintendent of Schools - Armelino always makes decisions about programs based on what is good for the students/youth in our community. Armelino embraces the concept of student Board Members on the Shasta County Board of Education and he demonstrates genuine caring and concern for students. His essence is that of an asset builder.
