The AUHS hiking club takes a break on their hike to Little Roaring Creek Falls in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area on Sunday.

The hiking club at Anderson Union High School draws about 12 students per hike among 50-60 club regulars, AUHS club advisor Gary Clawson said. The club plans one outing each month.

The club took a day hike to several waterfalls in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area on Sunday.

The club has also made an overnight hike and camping trip to Eiler Lake.

Beyond just hiking, Clawson said the club also makes an occasional kayaking trip as well as a spelunking adventure.

The club also enjoys letterboxing. In letterboxing, the students find directions to a hidden parcel somewhere in wildlands. If the clues are followed correctly, the students find the parcel. In the parcel the students would find a rubber stamp to stamp their own books.

Sometimes the clues are so difficult to follow that the parcel is never found, Clawson said.

Not only is the hiking club an enjoyable activity, it allows students to socialize with teachers outside of the classroom.

"It's a lot of fun," Clawson said, "the kids get to see that teachers aren't just teachers, but real people who like to get out and have fun."

Parents are always welcome on the excursions, Clawson said, adding that another teacher often joins the group hikes.
