West Valley High School band jazzed about new CD

Even as West Cottonwood Junior High School's band program might fizzle out of existence due to cuts in state funding, West Valley High School's after-hours band program is finishing up the year in strong fashion.

Although the recently-formed high school band only has 12 to 16 members, the band's size has not slowed them down even a little bit.

"The West Valley High School Band has been practicing and performing for two years," explained Marc Soares, a part-time swim coach who also directs the band and a student jazz group, Indigo Brew.

"When the kids are open-minded, it makes teaching them new songs very easy," says Soares.

Those songs are now recorded for posterity on the band's very first CD.

On Wednesday, April 22, that first CD was handed out to students.

"The kids have worked so hard. It is good that West Valley was able to make an after-school band," says Cathy Stinzel, a band parent. "With so many music programs being eliminated, it is nice that this band is able to be here for the kids."

Karl Stemmler, principal of West Valley High School, provides Soares with most of the funding necessary.

"I have a small stipend that I can provide Mr. Soares with some funding. The majority of the money comes from the district," Stemmler explains.

Many songs on the CD are those that the band practices regularly. They also have performed at football games, basketball games and, as of last year, commencement.

"With two students graduating this year, the band will be taking a serious blow," says Stinzel.
