Letter to the Editor: August 5, 2009

I truly believe the American people are searching for a real hero, especially in the fast-paced world we live in. This last month all we heard on TV on read in the paper was about Michael Jackson and what a great person he was.

When Elvis passed away, he also was idolized and worshiped.

However, we at the VFW Post 9650 in Anderson would like to tell you about our hero.

He was buried at the Veterans cemetery in Igo last Friday. His name was Robert "Bob" Peterson.

He was not the king of Rock 'n' Roll or the king of pop. He didn't do the moon walk, but in our minds at the VFW, he walked on water and was over the moon.

He didn't shake his hips or grab his crotch, but what he did was serve and defend our country during World War II as a Navy fighter pilot.

He didn't rub elbows with President Nixon or Ed Sullivan or Elizabeth Taylor, but he did work for all Veterans' rights in Shasta County and he was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Over many years, he participated in more than 400 memorial services, often playing taps for a beloved Veteran.

He was a mover and shaker, working diligently to get a Veterans cemetery at Igo so a Veteran, when he (or she) dies, can be buried alongside comrades with pride and dignity.

He didn't live in Graceland or Neverland, he lived in a comfortable home in Happy Valley with his beautiful, beloved, caring, devoted wife Marion. They have been married for more than 60 years.

Now, please pay close attention.

Yes, go get your cup of coffee because you should be alert and focused. Your vote counts.

Here goes . . .

Who would you say is the real hero? Someone who has been charged two or three times with child molestation? Someone who has been married three times and had numerous affairs? Or someone who's main purpose in life was helping people including children who were deaf, the Veterans of Shasta County?

Here's an extra clue - the first two individuals died of an overdose of drugs. The third died at age 85 when his Lord and Savior said, "Come on home, Bob. You did well. Give your bugle a rest because St. Peter has a gold one for you now."

If you voted for the third individual as your true hero, give yourself a pat on the back and have an extra donut with your coffee.

You deserve it.

You just voted for a real hero.
