A 46-year-old Anderson man died Sunday in a race car crash in the speed trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Barry Bryant died en route to a Salt Lake City hospital after the wreck, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
Bryant crashed at 5:55 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle while racing at approximately 200 mph, the Tribune reported.
Bryant, the youngest son of longtime local mechanic Tom Bryant, was part of a team of family members who race for Bryant Racing, according to the family's Web site. Seven members of the family, including Barry Bryant, have reached the prestigious 200 MPH Club, an organization of 500 members recognizing racers who go 200 mph or more.
Since 1999, Tom Bryant's sons Jeff, Dan and Barry have helped maintain the "Tom Thumb Special VII," the family's race car built in 1992, according to the family's Web site.
Barry Bryant began driving the car in 2000, the Web site said. A message left for family members at Tom Bryant's shop, Bryant Automotive on Churn Creek Road, wasn't immediately returned.
